The language we use—and how we define it—shapes how we understand the world, how we act within it, and how systems and structures function. It influences behaviour, informs practices, and can either reinforce harmful stereotypes and divisions or foster empathy, inclusion, and deeper understanding. Grounding ourselves in a critical understanding of narratives and their impact helps us intentionally define the words and framings we use.
The Shared Language Glossary Centring Girls and Girlhood honours the power, wisdom, and lived experiences of girls, young feminists, and communities historically marginalised—especially by language that has limited or erased them.
Designed as a resource for movements, funders, philanthropy, and sectors connected to or led by girls and young feminists, it aims to foster connection, collaboration, and shared understanding. It is a living resource, meant to constantly evolve, expand, and be refined. If you would like to contribute or support the expansion or refinement of this offering, please email us at hello@ourcollectivepractice.org with the subject line: Shared Language Glossary.
